Operation: Help a Friend
Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion
Over the last few weeks, you've noticed some out of character behavior from one of your close friends. Your pal is exhibiting some behaviors that lead you to believe that he or she is suffering from an unhealthy body image, and may be suffering from an eating disorder. You decide to talk with your friend, because you are concerned about his or her health. But just in case your friend doesn't want to listen to you, you also want to take with you an informational brochure containing helpful information that may help him or her to eat better or to exercise safer. That way, you can leave it with your friend to read and think about on his or her own.
Before you visit your friend, do some research so you are calm and informative when you are together. You will research several topics in order to put together a helpful brochure for your friend:
Eating Disorder symptoms
Nutrition facts, including why specific nutrients are needed
How to read nutrition information on food packages
Healthy snacks & recipes
Exercise tips for healthy weight management
After you have done your research, you need to design your brochure using Microsoft Publisher. Your brochure will be most effective if you include these parts:
A friendly letter to your pal, explaining why you designed this brochure for him/her (including the symptoms you've noticed and what you think they mean)
Nutrition facts
How to read nutrition information
Healthy snack/recipe suggestions
Exercise tips
Good luck! Your friend needs you now...
Part 1: Use the following websites to research your topics. Take notes!
Part 2: Use Microsoft Office to create your informational brochure. Remember to include all 5 sections.
You (& I) can use the following rubric to judge the effectiveness of your brochure.
Work with a friend to answer these questions on loose-leaf:
1. Does each person's brochure teach something new about Nutrition or healthy eating/exercise habits?
2. Do you think taking something to leave with your friend would help in this situation, or do you think your friend would listen to you without getting upset or denying there was a problem? Explain your answer.
3. Together, find two websites and one phone number of organizations that help teens deal with eating disorders.
