Famous African-Americans
Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion
Greetings! It is my pleasure to welcome you to the first annual AAAS (African-American Award Show) planning meeting. The producers of this event have asked for my help, and I have responded by hiring you, the most talented & creative group of writers in town. Each person on the list below is being honored at the awards ceremony for his or her contributions to society, particularly within their specific genre. We need to put together a spectacular presentation about each person, as well as design the award to be handed to him or her the night of the big show! The night of the award show, YOU will introduce one person, presenting a slide show about his or her accomplishments, and end by handing that person the award you have designed. Work hard; this is a big responsibility, as we'll be on all the major networks!
You will research one person of African-American heritage, and prepare a PowerPoint slide show about his or her accomplishments, as well as design a certificate of award for that person. You will present your slide show and certificate to us the day of the award show.
STEP ONE: You will need to use web materials (see the list below), as well as at least two other sources (books, magazines, audio/visual, interviews, etc) to research as much as you can about the person you will focus on. You should focus on the following important information:
Short family history- when/where she was born, what her family is/was like, schooling, important events from childhood/young adulthood, etc.
Accomplishments- career choices, anyone who was an influence on her, why she is famous, etc.
Effects on other people- people/groups who have been influenced by this woman, etc.
STEP TWO: After researching and learning about this person, you will create a PowerPoint slide show presentation that is made up of the following parts:
Title page- includes your name, your focus person's name & category (or a catchy slogan)
Family History- see above (1-2 slides)
Accomplishments- see above (2-4 slides)
Effects on other people- see above (2-4 slides)
Bibliography- Keep track of your resources, and use correct bibliography format to include your list as the last page of your slide show.
STEP THREE: You may use Microsoft Publisher or another word processing program to design a certificate which honors this person in his or her particular field. Include the person's name, the title you've come up with for the award, and some type of graphic or picture that represents the person's major accomplishment. You should focus on why this person has been important to society (why does he/she deserve an award?).
Remember, you need to use at least two books and other non-Web resources for your project as well as this list of good websites to help you learn as much as you can about your subject.

Our ratings depend on how well you do on your presentation! We want to come back to do this job again next year, so please do your best by following the following rubric guidelines for your presentation.
When you have completed this task, please answer the following questions on loose-leaf, and turn them in.
1. What was your favorite part of this task? Explain why.
2. Whose PowerPoint slide show was most impressive, and did the best job showcasing their focus person's talents or accomplishments? Give at least three reasons why you judged this slide show to be 'the best'.
3. What would you do the next time you had to complete a similar assignment in order to feel less stressed or produce a better end product? Explain at least two areas in which you could improve, and tell specifically how you would do so.
