Kids Encouraging Youth Success at CSIA!
In 2009, a group of 12 8th graders set out on a mission: to serve their CSIA family and the larger Columbus community. They have taken on a variety of leadership roles, working to communicate clear goals for their group, and identifying several 'key' components to their service this year.
On Sunday, October 25, these students will coordinate a group of students, parents and staff from CSIA to join the Columbus area Making Strides walk to raise funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer: http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/MakingStridesAgainstBreastCancer/MSABCFY10Ohio?pg=entry&fr_id=19937 *For some reason, I can't get this to click as a link, but if you copy and paste, you can search for "CSIA keys" and actually make a pledge online!
The week before the walk, students will collect pledges from their classmates, sponsor a 'Cookies for the Cure' swap, and lead a school-based Making Strides walk around our school on Friday, when students have been encouraged to wear PINK to show their support.
KEYS helped to raise awareness, and in so doing, also helped to raise over $800 toward the Making Strides cause! Great job CSIA!
In November, students will organize a food drive to benefit the Mid-Ohio Food Bank.
WOW! The van was FULL of canned and boxed goods for the Food Bank. Fantastic job.
In December, the students will put together a middle school Uniform Fashion Show to help show the MS students that uniform doesn't have to be boring.
What an exciting event. The music was wonderful, complimented by a very professional looking slide show, and the 8th grade models were calm, cool, and collected as they strutted down the aisle. The rest of the MS students went nuts- a well-planned successful event!
When the 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck in Haiti, students in KEYS whipped together the fastest fundraiser we've ever done. In a matter of three days, students made announcements, pulled together a bulletin board to show who had donated, collected and counted money, then took it personally to the Ohio Historical Society's Hope for Haiti drive.
Together, students at CSIA raised over $800 in three days, mostly in coins ("Bring Change to Cause Change"), to help the earthquake victims in Haiti.
In the winter months, students will arrange for classroom help in the K-5 classrooms, possibly set up tutoring sessions for the middle school students, and find other ways to provide support within our building.
School-wide events that are possible: a School Fair, focusing on our country study of Spain, with activities and learning opportunities for all students; an Issues Fair, offering skits, advice, discussion, and hands-on activities dealing with topics all students struggle with: self-esteem, bullying, peer pressure, academic success.
